2003 AUG 7 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Self-monitoring of blood glucose is helpful in the management of gestational diabetes.
According to a study from France, "About 6% of all pregnancies are complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus in France. Consensus is obtained for defining but not for the screening and diagnosis criteria."
"Management of gestational diabetes mellitus reduce materno-fetal morbidity," said P. Fontaine at the Clinique Marc-Linquette. "Postprandial blood glucose peaks are highly predictive of macrosomia and have to be controlled in strict rates: less than 1.40 g/L one hour after meal and less than 1.20 g/L two hours after meal. Self-monitoring of blood glucose allows more rapid start of insulin therapy, better glycemic control, and reduction in macrosomia."
"The impact of self-monitoring appears to be lower in the management of diet-controlled gestational diabetes," concluded Fontaine. ...
