Nasdaq stocks snapped a two-day downtrend Thursday, but rallied more than 2.1% before giving up much of their earlier gains on higher volume. The composite ended up 0.8%, the Nasdaq 100 0.1%.
Kos Pharmaceuticals gapped up 7.13 to a 52-week high of 34.14 on its highest trade this year, as more than 4.8 million shares changed hands.
The drug maker earned 31 cents in the second quarter, reversing last year's 50-cent loss and beating views by 24 cents, amid strong sales of its Advicor and Niaspan cholesterol drugs. Kos expects '03 profit of $1.20-$1.40 vs. views for 75 cents.
Inamed gained 8.51 to 66.40, breaking out of a six-week consolidation on five times normal volume. Late Wednesday, the cosmetic surgery products maker topped second-quarter views by 11 cents with a 76-cent profit, a 41% jump from the prior year.
SafeNet added 2.85, or 8.9%, to 34.75 on double its usual turnover. The maker of network security gear said late Wednesday it earned 20 cents a share in the second quarter, up fourfold from last year and 4 cents above views. It expects to earn 69-72 cents in '03, up from its prior outlook of 64-65 cents.
