Byline: GLORIA LAU
Working women were unusual in Clara Barton's world. But to Barton, unusual was just fine.
Barton (1821-1912) wanted to make a difference in her world: to help those in need. But she wasn't married, so she had to worry about her own support. And satisfying work was hard to come by. Often men who operated businesses made it known that they preferred women to stay home and care for their families.
But Barton had determination. She directed that determination to help found the American Red Cross in 1881.
The first person to establish a lasting Red Cross society in the U.S, Barton set up a legacy of can-do assistance during disasters and wartime that continues today.
But her strength of character and leadership was clear before then.
