American in talks to avert strike
American Airlines and its flight attendants continued federally mediated talks to settle a contract dispute that may lead to a crippling strike just before the July 4 travel period. The two sides have been in talks for more thantwo years. Federal mediators last week declared a 30-day cooling-off period. If no deal is reached, the attendants in theory could strike on July 1. But President Bush is expected to block any work stoppage.
