Byline: Marilyn Much
James Meyer likes to stick with his customers -- so much so that since 1999 he's bought five of them.
Meyer is president and chief executive of Spartan Stores Inc. On his watch, the company has been on a buying binge that's turned what was strictly a food wholesaler into a top regional supermarket and drugstore chain.
Spartan runs and supplies 127 groceries and drugstores. Most are located in Michigan and Ohio and operate under the names Ashcraft's and Food Town. The company's wholesale business distributes goods to 350 independent grocers and 9,600 convenience stores.
On The Prowl
Spartan's most recent acquisition came in March, when it closed on the purchase of Prevo's Family Markets Inc., a 10-store grocery chain in western Michigan that Spartan has been supplying for years. Its Prevo's buy adds about $50 million in sales.
Now Meyer is on the prowl for more buys. He's looking for neighborhood or independent supermarkets in contiguous markets within the Great Lakes region, where Spartan operates.
