Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Tuesday is set to unveil a new, more powerfulversion of its flagship Athlon microprocessor.
The new Athlon MP targets network servers and design workstations.
This will extend AMD's battle against archrival Intel Corp. into new markets. In the last two years, AMD has gained in the personal computer processor market on the strength of its Athlon.
Analysts estimate the company has about a 20% share of the PC chip market, up from less than 10% in mid-1998.
"We are starting our march into the enterprise market," said Robert Mitton, AMD division manager for workstations and servers. "We are going after the financial, engineering and digital content-creation markets."
On Wednesday, AMD is expected to separately debut its fastest chip ever, a 1.4 GHz Athlon processor for PCs. That device will probably be the last of a string of PC processors based on a design AMD code-named Thunderbird.
