Some people gain notoriety on the basis of personality. Some win acclaim fora single, heroic act. But long-term excellence comes only from dedicated work, says Shaquille O'Neal.
" "Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do,' " O'Neal said, quoting Greek philosopher Aristotle, after beingvoted the National Basketball Association's 1999-2000 Most Valuable Player in a record landslide vote.
It's been his approach his entire life. "I've always been a workaholic," O'Neal said in a recent interview.
O'Neal has maximized his 7-foot, 1-inch, 300-pound-plus frame by working to develop basketball skills such as lightening-quick spin moves and a soft touch on his shots.
"Shaq wants to be the best," said Chick Hearn, the Los Angeles Lakers' Hall of Fame announcer. "I think one day he'll go down as the greatest center that ever played."
And while O'Neal likes to have fun, he brings intense focus to the court.
