Bush team mulls Mideast move;
gun battle threatens cease-fire
Top officials met at the White House to consider the next move in a drive tohalt Middle East violence and keep fading peace hopes alive. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, President Bush's national security adviser, directed the talks. Meanwhile, a Gaza Strip gun battle threatened to topple the fragile cease-fire. The fighting, in which 18 Palestinians, one Israeli officer and two soldiers were injured, followed a drop-off in violence over the weekend.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the army had a free hand in defending Israelis and vowed that Israel wouldn't resume peace talks "until there is total quiet."
