Cisco reportedly stiffs Marconi
The networking giant is not in talks to acquire the British telecom gear maker, sources said. Earlier reports had Cisco eyeing Marconi for $17 billion in a move that would have strengthened its foothold in the European telecom gear market. But analysts and investors doubted the proposed deal because it would be inconsistent with Cisco's strategy of buying firms with strong tech products.
Nortel delays unit IPO on outlook
Nortel Networks had planned to spin off its fiber-optic unit this fall. That's been pushed back by at least six months, said CEO John Roth. "There's just no appetite out there for it," he said. The unit makes parts that boost the speed and capacity of fiber-optic networks. Nortel remains No. 1 for fiber-optic gear, but sales slid 52% in the first quarter amid a spending slowdown.
