EMC Corp. on Tuesday left no doubt that the data storage business, like all tech areas, is struggling. The company said it will cut 1,100 jobs, or 4% of its work force.
The uncertain economy played a role in the cuts, but EMC might be facing an even bigger issue. Just as the rise of open standards in the past threw such companies as IBM Corp. off their perch, the storage industry is trying to do the same to high-end kingpin EMC.
The company has long won sales against rivals simply because customers considered it the safest bet. Buyers paid a higher price for EMC products in return for the perceived value and security.
But the economic slowdown has ushered in a more frugal time. Analysts say users are giving a closer look to storage products from IBM and Hitachi Data Systems. (See related story on Hitachi, above.)
Freedom Of Choice
Businesses say they want storage products of different makers to work together more easily. That would give them more freedom of choice, rather than feeling compelled to buy all their storage goods from the same maker.
