U.N. gives U.S., Britain a month
to sell sanctions revisions on Iraq
The Security Council extended a U.N. humanitarian program. The current oil-for-food program, which was to expire, is renewable for up to six months, and is an exception to the 11-year-old sanctions against Iraq. A joint U.S.-British proposal submitted on May 22 aims to free the flow of civilian goods into Iraq to improve the quality of life for everyday citizens. But it would tighten the arms embargo to punish Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Saddam opposes the move. Russia, China and other members have resisted it.
