Xenical, made by Swiss drug maker Roche, helps obese people lose twice as much weight as a diet alone, German doctors said on Friday. Instead of suppressing appetite, the drug prevents the body from absorbing a third of the fat eaten. A study of more than 15,000 overweight men and women found the average weight loss was 11%, or 24 pounds. Also, patients had an average 15% drop in blood sugar levels, an 18% decrease in blood pressure and a 14% fall incholesterol. Participants had long-term weight problems, and most had tried todiet and exercise but failed.
