Wal-Mart sticks with growth plan

despite weak consumer spending

The world's largest retailer will add 40 million square feet of retail spacein the U.S. this year, even as some rivals shutter stores due to the weak economy. Wal-Mart also said at its annual meeting that it'll expand overseas through new stores and acquisitions. The discount retailer plans $9 billion in capital spending this year, unchanged from 2000.

Walmart.com to offer cheap Web access: It'll team up with AOL Time Warner's America Online to provide Internet access to its customers for less than $10 a month. Wal-Mart Connect will be launched this fall. AOL will hike its monthly price for unlimited use by $1.95 to $23.90 in July.
