But Trouble Ahead Likely
1The unemployment rate fell in May from April's 4.5%, and nonfarm payrolls slid just 19,000. But analysts noted that the lower jobless rate was due to a 485,000-job reduction in the civilian work force. Revisions to earlier reports and changes in seasonal adjustments made the data harder than usual to read. But with a loss of 124,000 jobs for the month, manufacturing clearly remains the deadweight around the economy's neck.More on A7

2The manufacturing activity index of the National Association of Purchasing Management sank to 42.1 in May from 43.2 in April. That's 10 straight below-50 monthly readings, or 10 straight months of contraction. The NAPM said the report implies an overall economic decline of 0.2% at an annual rate. Virtuallyall segments of the report fell: the orders index, backlog index, inventory index and the employment index.See Vital Signs on A2
