Tired of seeing your kids vegetate in front of video games?
Why not turn their hobby into something useful by helping them create their own games? Or perhaps you'd like to try your hand at making a video game.
It's not as difficult as it may sound. While making a video game isn't for everyone, a number of software programs, books and Web sites make it a reasonable endeavor for anyone interested.
A place to begin is Macmillan Software's $50 Game Programming Starter Kit 4.0. It comes with just about everything you'll need to learn how to design a game from scratch.
The first step is to read the book that comes with the kit -- "Game Design: Secrets of the Sages," by Marc Saltzman. This book will give you a window into the development process through interviews with hundreds of top game designers.
Toby Gard -- one of the minds behind the popular video game character Lara Croft of "Tomb Raider" -- explains the basics behind creating an interesting character.
