EarthLink Inc. is ready to bring speedy Internet serviceto rural customers -- if they're ready to pay for it.
The No. 2 Internet service provider on Tuesday began offering Net access viasatellites to residents living in remote areas of the U.S.
The service costs $70 a month. That's $20 more than high-speed service via digital subscriber lines and $50 more than basic dial-up service. Users also have to pay $900 to EarthLink for a small satellite dish.
But EarthLink officials say rural customers are itching for fast Net access. So they're willing to pay the steep fees.
"That is something that consumers want," said Tom Andrus, EarthLink's vice president of emerging technologies. "It's never been a demand issue; it's always been a supply issue."
