Maverick personal computer maker Apple Computer Inc. is turning conservative.
Known for its funky-shaped, wild-colored personal computers, Apple now realizes it needs to rein in its far-out design philosophy to attract a wider base of users. It wants to win back students and convert business professionalsinto users of its Macintosh operating system.
Apple also is talking more these days about what its products can do, as opposed to how they look, analysts say.
"We're seeing the new direction of Apple," said Tim Deal, an analyst with Technology Business Research in Hampton, N.H. "Apple is getting away from some of the hype and more into features. . . . It can no longer sell its products onthe basis of design, because there's a finite number of people who are going to buy them."
Simpler Design
Apple unveiled Tuesday a new line of iBook laptop computers that ditches thecolored clamshell shape in favor of a much simpler, flatter design.
