Nextel lowers loss, to slash staff
Nextel Communications lost 56 cents a share in the first quarter vs. a 59-cent loss a year ago. It beat views by a penny, as it added 695,400 global subscribers in the quarter. But the wireless operator plans to trim 5% of its work force, or 850 jobs, to cut costs. Its sales rose 48% to $1.74 billion.
BT dumping stakes on Vodafone
British Telecom plans to sell investments in Japan and Spain to rival Vodafone to slash $5.72 billion from its $43 billion debt. The two firms said BT looks to sell its 20% holding in Japan Telecom, the country's No. 3 carrier.Vodafone already owns 25% of Japan Telecom. BT is also in talks to sell its 20% stake in Japan Telecom's J-Phone mobile unit. Vodafone also wants to buy BT's 18% stake in Spanish mobile operator Airtel, adding to its 73% stake. BT'sshares bounced 5.95, or 7%, to 86.85. Vodafone's lost 1.15, or 4%, to 29.13.
The wireless phone industry will reap $1 trillion in global sales between now and 2010, much of it derived from 3G wireless service, said a study from industry group UMTS Forum.
