U.S. inspectors ready Hainan trip
to plan return of downed EP-3E
A small group of defense contractors headed to Hawaii to prepare to fly to China's Hainan Island. They'll determine how to disassemble the Navy spy plane.The team of five civilians has detailed knowledge of the EP-3E Aries II aircraft and will receive briefings at U.S. Pacific Command headquarters. They'll probably remain on Hainan for at least two days before returning with adetailed assessment of how to recover the plane.
The Chinese government announced that foreign journalists wouldn't be allowed to go to Hainan to report on the inspection of the crippled plane. "We are formally telling you not to go," a Foreign Ministry official said.
China's violation of religious freedom has intensified, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom said. The sharply worded report urged the U.S. to pressure Beijing to improve.
