For "Ben," Washington, D.C., was "the only place to be" this past weekend.

A college student from New Mexico, Ben had planned to spend the weekend railing against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

When rally organizers switched themes to protest the war on terrorism, Ben didn't miss a beat.

"All these issues are interrelated," he said.

Indeed, for many protesters, the rallies were a chance to highlight the real cause of the attacks: capitalist globalization.

For many, America was as much the problem as the victim, oppressing the rest of the world through its policies and culture.
