Internet appliances have had a rocky start.
Many models -- like the Audrey from 3Com Corp. and Sony Corp.'s eVilla -- have been scrapped already. But analysts say the concept could still have merit.
As people get more dependent on the Internet for information, more will want to tap into the Net from different kinds of machines. Internet appliances give you online access without tying up a personal computer.
With 3Com and Sony bowing out of the market, Compaq Computer Corp. has emerged as one of the last big champions of Internet appliances.
It sells an appliance called the iPaq that's categorized as "Internet in a box." That means it has everything you need to surf the Net right out of the package.
It was designed to be as simple as possible, company officials say.
