Intel Corp. on Monday rolled out a dozen new microprocessors that it says are the fastest, most efficient chips for portable personal computers.
"We think we are dramatically extending our lead," said Frank Spindler, vice president and general manager of Intel's mobile platforms group.
The big question, though, is whether anyone will buy the chips -- no matter how speedy and power-efficient they are.
Sales of PCs were already way down before the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Consumer confidence fell even further in the wake of the tragedy, analysts say.
And mobile PCs are faring the worst because they cost more than desktop models.
"In a tough economic climate, people say, "I will only get one PC,' " said Lehman Bros. Inc. analyst Dan Niles in San Francisco. "And prices on desktops are compelling right now."
