Dot-com job cuts plunge in Sept.
Dot-com job cut announcements fell 39% to 2,986 from August, says outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. They slid 37% from a year ago. It's also the lowest since July 2000, when dot-com layoffs really started to take off. More than 132,000 dot-com jobs have been cut since Challenger started tracking in Dec. 1999.
Construction down hard in Aug.
Spending fell 1.1% from July to an annual rate of $845.5 bil. That's the biggest fall since a 1.3% loss in July '00. Residential construction slid 0.4% to a rate of $387.3 bil. Year over year, construction spending rose 5.2%.
O'Neill likely to call for stimulus
An aide to Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill says he's expected to tell Congress Wednesday the U.S. can still avoid recession with appropriate steps to boost growth. But he's expected to agree that GDP fell in Q3. No time frame on a stimulus package was given.
