NTT DoCoMo begins 3G service
Japan's No. 1 mobile carrier launched the world's first third-generation network after a four-month trial to iron out system problems. The 3G cell phones run up to 40 times faster than current cell phones. But they don't have some features expected to entice buyers, such as video clips and music downloads.

Vivendi Universal withheld $563 mil due as part payment for a next-generation license in France. It said the $5.4 bil price tag is too steep for the expected return. The media and entertainment giant may be fined and lose the license. European telecoms in 2000 agreed to pay $100 bil for wireless permits, but now don't know how to make their money back.
