One mark of a civilized nation is its means of caring for sick and aging citizens.
In the U.S., much of that care comes from nurses -- tens of thousands of them employed by companies such as Manor Care Corp.
Manor Care operates 447 nursing homes and other facilities in 30 states. On any given day it provides services to 50,000 patients.
But the type of patients it cares for is changing.
The company was formed in the September 1998 merger of Manor Care Inc. and Health Care & Retirement Corp. The two began refitting operations to better handle patients needing intensive attention and services.
The best measure of progress toward that goal is the company's mix of Medicare revenue, says Manor Care Chief Executive Paul Ormond. Over the past year, the firm's Medicare revenue has risen to 28% of total revenue from 23%.
