Visx Inc. is the largest maker of laser eye-surgery systems. QAD Inc. makes business software, but faces bigger rivals in its market.
Both companies are struggling. Yet their 5-year relationship shows no sign of strain.
Since 1996, Visx has run its business using QAD's enterprise resource planning software. The QAD software helps Visx manage everything from its assembly lines to its accounting to its customer service.
"We look at (the QAD-powered computer system) day by day, hour by hour, and see what we need to run the company," said Visx Controller Derek Bertocci.
He says Visx reviewed many suppliers before choosing QAD. Before it was in use, "none of our systems could communicate with any other," Bertocci said.
There are other reasons for the Visx-QAD coupling. One is that getting the OK to sell the laser surgery products in the U.S. isn't easy.
