An Algerian pilot arrested in London instructed four of the hijackers involved in the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and the Pentagon, prosecutors said at a hearing Friday.
Lotfi Raissi, 27, who was arrested on Sept. 21, appeared in Bow Street Magistrates Court on a U.S. warrant seeking his arrest on a charge of giving false data on an application for a pilot's license.
Prosecutors said Raissi qualified in the U.S. as a pilot in 1997, attending the same flight school as four of the hijackers involved in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Prosecutor Arvinda Sambir told the court Raissi was "a lead instructor" of four of the pilots responsible for the hijackings, and that his job was to make sure they were "capable and trained for this purpose." Sambir said authorities believe Raissi was closely involved with the men that flew American Flight 77 into the Pentagon.
Further charges were expected.
