Putin tries to calm own Muslims
Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to calm tens of millions of Muslims in Russia and other Soviet ex-republics by saying the war on terrorism is not a fight against Islam. Putin has cast his support behind the U.S.-led anti-terrorist coalition and urged the predominantly Muslim nations on Russia's southern flank in Central Asia to do the same. International attention has focused on Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which border Afghanistan and may provide a convenient stage for U.S. strikes.
