Farmers fight to block fund cuts
Lobbyists for grain and cotton farmers are trying to stop an effort in Congress to shift billions in crop subsidies into programs that pay farmers for retiring land and improving environmental practices. The House is set to take up a farm bill this week. An amendment would boost farm conservation spending by $1.9 bil a year over the bill's levels.
D.C. airport might reopen soon
Reagan National, the only U.S. commercial airport still closed after the terrorist attacks, will reopen once new security procedures are in place, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said. A decision may come as early as Tuesday. The shutdown has dealt a blow to the economy of the nation's capital, which relies heavily on tourism. Members of Congress have long favored the airport because it offers a fast getaway for trips home.
