Mandalay Resort to ax 4,300 jobs

Mandalay said Q3 profit will fall sharply from 38 cents a year ago. Analysts expected 35 cents. The hotel and casino operator will cut 15% of its Nevada work force. Also, 120 senior managers will take pay cuts. It's the latest hotel chain to warn as tourists cancel trips after the Sept. 11 terror attacks. It will also put off work on a 1.8-mil-square-foot Mandalay Bay convention center for six months. It's now slated to open Jan. 2003.

Marriott prepares for cost-cutting

The sharp drop in travel has forced the hotel firm to make contingency plans for layoffs and shortened work schedules, The Washington Post reported, citing sources. The moves could affect up to 20% of its headquarters staff. Marriott Int'l has shifted some workers to part-time. Before the attacks, it said revenue per room would drop 7%-10% in Q3.
