She is back. After eight years of national ridicule for her "service" under Bill Clinton, Janet Reno might have been expected to retire quietly in Florida. Instead, she is set for a high-profile run for its governorship.
This should keep the writers at "Saturday Night Live" busy. But it won't help Floridians much. Reno's troublesome record as a public official would make her election a joke on them all.
Reno says her record as an "independent prosecutor" lends strength to her campaign. Even by campaign standards, this is outlandish.
Reno presided over one of the most politicized and irresponsible Justice Departments in American history.
She set the tone early, making one of her first acts a mass political firing. At Clinton's direction, she axed all 93 U.S. attorneys.
Then there was her disastrous Waco standoff with David Koresh. A hyper Reno approved the decision to confront him at the least prudent moment. That led to the deaths of at least 17 children, as well as 63 or so adults.
This oddly served to improve Reno's image. She took "responsibility" for the carnage before the press. But she wasn't quite responsible enough to resign.
