Some Wireless Users Aren't
Chicken To Call For Help
Emergency dispatchers across the U.S. are struggling to cope with misdialed 911 calls from cell phones. The National Emergency Number Association, based in Columbus, Ohio, calculates that 25% to 50% of wireless calls to 911 are mistakes.
The situation is just as bad in the U.K. There, the distress number is 999. One in four 999 calls to Scotland Yard are cell-phone misdials, say the Metropolitan Police.
Recently a rooster pecked at a mobile phone dropped in a barnyard. It hit 9-9-9. Sussex police heard only clucking noises on the line. They were not amused.
Cell phones bouncing around in bags or pockets cause false alarms, says Sussex Deputy Chief Constable Maria Wallis.
