Ericsson sees dark days ahead
The Swedish wireless gear maker said the ailing telecom industry is unlikely to recover next year. Ericsson could only give a "very, very early indication" for 2002, but saw "no clear signs of a recovery." Ericsson's U.S. shares fell 19% to 4.01, a 52-week low.
Nokia: Cell phone rollout on track
The Finnish wireless giant said it'll start selling GPRS handsets this month. Ericsson and Motorola already have 2.5-generation models, but Nokia's entry could jump-start sales, analysts said. Nokia and Ericsson both say 10 million GPRS phones will be sold this year. Nokia repeated that its long-term market share goal is 40%, despite a second-quarter slide. It expects a 35% share this year.
