Drug-resistant HIV strains on the rise
By 2005, nearly half of HIV patients in San Francisco won't respond to drugs now used to treat the disease, said researchers at the Los Angeles and San Francisco campuses of the University of California. The rate of resistance in the city now is 28%. The main reason for the likely rise is the development of resistance during treatment rather than transmission of drug-resistant strains, they said.
