Unions are creations of the state. They rely on government power to prevent non-unionized workers from offering labor services in competition with union members.

Even with this unique, government-granted monopoly power to do what would land most employers in jail, unions have been losing market share steadily for years. This has triggered no end of union manipulation of their political power to defend and expand their control over the workplace.

Unions used their political power to kill the Teamworkers for Employers and Managers Act in 1996 because it would have allowed workplace cooperation outside of their control. They use it constantly to oppose free trade, because production outside the country escapes their power to …
