June chip sales drop from May
Global chip sales eased 9% to $11.6 billion due to weak economies and an inventory glut, the Semiconductor Industry Association said. Year over year, sales plunged 30.7%. Chipmakers have suffered as demand for PCs, cell phones and other electronics has fallen. Excess IT spending, especially among telecoms, has also hurt. Sales in the Americas fell 13% from May. European sales slumped 11%.
Intel plans to open its new network processor design center in Malaysia, its first in Asia.
Dell stopped selling PCs or laptops with the Linux operating system, citing weak demand.
