But May Rise Again Soon
1They sank 23,000 to 346,000 in the week ended Saturday -- the third straight drop and a big surprise to analysts who expected a rise to 385,000. These data are especially volatile in summer, when factories close for retooling. Heavy layoff announcements hint claims will surge again soon. Still, the more reliable continuing claims for the week ended July 21 -- the most recent data available -- fell 80,000 to 3 million. That's heartening, as it shows job-seekers are having better luck.

Intel's CEO Barrett Says
2The world PC industry is past the worst of the technology downcycle, but a full-blown rebound depends on the global economy, said Intel CEO Craig Barrett. He sees demand for PCs improving in the second half on buying ahead of the new school term and the holidays, and the introduction of Windows XP. But that's more seasonal than fundamental. The sluggish global economy has made consumption patterns difficult to predict, he said.
