Bluelight Taking On AOL
By Cutting Price
A chain store nipping at the heels of mighty America Online? That's what Bluelight.com, the electronic commerce Web site of Kmart Corp., is doing. It cut the price of its unlimited Internet access service to $8.95 from $9.95 monthly on July 30. Kmart says that makes Bluelight.com the cheapest major Internet service provider -- far less than the almost $24 consumers pay monthly for AOL.
Bluelight.com started offering cut-rate ISP service in March last year to help lure shoppers to its Web site.
Bluelight.com has a ways to go before it gets near AOL's huge roster of subscribers. About 7 million subscribe to Bluelight.com vs. more than 30 million for AOL. But since the price dropped on Monday, the rate of new subscriptions is soaring. "There's been a 1,500% increase in subscription rates over a normal Monday," said spokeswoman Abigail Jacobs.
