We often shudder at the phrase "public service" because it's typically a misleading cover for serving a special interest. But John Stossel's "Tampering With Nature" on ABC last Friday night embodies the true meaning of the phrase.
In the news special, Stossel didn't merely use fact to refute fiction. He evoked fury, disbelief and lots of head-shaking.
Fury, because from our living rooms we saw what we've read about for years: the brainwashing of our children by "educators." In the show, children were bused in for an Earth Day celebration that had the flavor of an old-time religious revival. The only difference was the object of worship was the creation, not the Creator.
Michael Sanera and Jane S. Shaw warned us about green proselytizing some years ago in "Facts Not Fear: A Parent's Guide to Teaching Children About the Environment." But watching it happen on the TV screen gives it another dimension. It should provoke parents to wrath. Political indoctrination being passed off as academic study should not be tolerated.
Disbelief, because we once again actually saw the foolish at work: protesters dressed in choir robes shouting amens to a faux minister preaching the evils of genetically modified foods. Never mind that there's no science to support this modern-day temperance movement.
And never mind that man has been genetically altering food for centuries -- and is living longer and healthier because of it.
