Federated Investors nearly tripled in price in a year, then fell into a base in November 2000. It broke out in late May, climbing as high as 32.77 before lapsing into its current seven-week base. The stock finished the week just 1% short of its old high.

Earnings growth has slowed in the last two quarters, falling from 38% to 21% to 17%. The 10 analysts surveyed by First Call expect profit to rise 19% in fiscal 2001 vs. a 34% increase in 2000. Sales growth also has decelerated in recent quarters, slipping from 14% to 8% to 2%.
But the firm's after-tax profit margin stands at 24.3%, its highest point in at least 11 quarters.
