Will Xerox Corp.'s loss be Hewlett-Packard Co.'s gain?
Xerox's decision two weeks ago to bow out of the consumer inkjet printer and copier business could have a bigger effect than just adding a few more names to its competitors' customer lists.
At least, that's what HP, the biggest of those competitors, hopes.
HP, the acknowledged front-runner in low-end printers, hopes Xerox's departure from that market will strengthen its own position in a new area for HP: high-end commercial printers for corporations, governments and printing companies.
The scenario HP envisions? Xerox's strategic shift having a ripple effect that benefits HP in the long term.
Xerox entered the market late -- just four years ago -- and never achieved more than a 2% market share in low-end printers.
