Agere slashes 25% of work force
The optical parts maker will let go of 4,000 workers, cut output and take up to $900 million in charges to cope with the sharp downturn in the chip industry. Agere Systems, a spinoff of Lucent Technologies, cut its third-quarter sales outlook to $920 million. That's slightly below the low end of its old forecast. It axed 2,000 jobs in April and expects to save $520 million a year from the combined cuts. Its shares rose 1.51, or 25%, to 7.50.
Alcatel will spin off parts units
The French telecom gear maker will also seek buyers for them as part of a global strategy to outsource production. Alcatel is also seeking buyers for its e-business distribution activities. Its components activities have 8,000 employees at over 41 sites worldwide. The e-business activities employ 6,000 in Europe. Alcatel will sell three sites in France as part of the outsourcing effort.
