9 GIs Die As Afghan Fight Rages

1U.S. jets carpet-bombed mountains in eastern Afghanistan as allied ground forces moved to cut enemy escape routes. One U.S. helicopter was hit and another shot down. At least 40 U.S. troops were wounded. As many as 5,000 enemy fighters were in the area. Gen. Richard Myers said the enemy was dug in well, and well armed.

Buyers Take Lead On Wall Street

2The major stock indexes ignored Oracle's bad news and powered higher on heavy volume. The Nasdaq scored the biggest win with a 3.1% jump. The Dow, which added 2.1%, and the S&P 500, up 1.9%, weren't far behind. Fiber optics, networkers, software firms and chipmakers scored the day's biggest gains. Cyclicals also had a good showing. News Corp. Sees U.S. Ad Revival

3Rupert Murdoch's firm offered hope for the ailing ad market, saying its U.S. ad sales are up 4%-5% so far this year. This followed several straight declining quarters. It said it's too early to call a bottom. The ad slump has forced many media giants to slash '02 forecasts. In Jan., News Corp. forecast profit growth in the mid single digits.
