Andrx rosy on generic clearance
The drug firm rallied 8.46, or 25%, to 41.91 after a U.S. court decision should clear the way for it to sell a version of GlaxoSmithKline's depression drug Wellbutrin and smoking-cessation drug Zyban. Glaxo plans to appeal. Andrx expects an FDA OK by midyear and sees getting 180 days of generic exclusivity.
Elan and AHP will end drug trials
Irish drug maker Elan and American Home Products won't resume trials of an experimental Alzhei-mer's drug. They were halted in Jan. after some patients became ill. The French patients were said to have clinical signs of inflammation in their central nervous system.
Biotechs slide on weak forecasts
Invitrogen crashed 11.52, or 25%, to 34.12 after it said sales of its gene cloning and analysis kits will be slower than expected. It sees 9% sales growth in '02 vs. views for 20%. Protein Design Labs fell 6% after warning that sales will drop 10%-15% this year and it doesn't see an '02 profit. It's developing antibodies to prevent or treat diseases.
