Houghton Mifflin's sixth-grade textbook "A Message of Ancient Days" includes special features to help young students think critically and spot bias.

The following explains "point of view." It blames the Roman view of barbarians on fears, feelings and ignorance. Judge for yourself:

The Roman historian Tacitus said of the barbarians, "They love idleness yet hate peace." As his description shows, Romans thought barbarians were uncivilized and warlike people.

Barbarian is a term that shows a point of view. It expresses the attitudes of one group of people toward another. It indicates the fears groups have about people they do not understand.

The Roman Point of View

The word "barbarian" comes from a Greek word. It means a person from another country. The Romans used the word to refer to the people beyond the frontier. However, the barbarian was not just a foreigner. A barbarian was someone the Romans believe was less refined or had lower social and cultural standards.
