Byline: REINHARDT KRAUSE
A fierce lobbying battle pitting regional Bell phone companies against rivals is heading to the Federal Communications Commission.
The Bells, which dominate local phone markets, are on a roll.
The House Wednesday passed a sweeping bill that unravels much of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. But the Senate seems unlikely to pass similar legislation this year.
The Bells and rivals will muster lobbying forces at the FCC next. The Bells are pushing for changes in how companies compete in providing Internet and data services.
"The House vote gives the Bells political momentum for broadband deregulation as they push their agenda at the FCC," said Paul Glenchur, analyst at Schwab Capital Markets' Washington Research Group.
The stakes are huge for Verizon Communications Inc., SBC Communications Inc., BellSouth Corp. and Qwest Communications International Inc.
