NYSE stocks digested some recent gains on lighter volume Friday, ending a two-day winning streak. The Dow fell 0.1%, but rose 0.1% for the week. The S&P 500 lost 0.7% Friday and 0.1% for the week.
Waste Management tanked 3.69 to 25.13. Volume exploded to 20.6 million shares vs. average daily volume of 1.6 million.
The trash hauler and disposal company forecast pretax expenses related to Enron's bankruptcy. Fourth-quarter earnings will miss estimates as a result, the firm said.
Flowers Foods continued its fall, shedding 1.50 to 23.50 on five times normal trade. Banc of America followed Merrill Lynch in downgrading the stock after Flowers missed fourth-quarter EBITDA estimates.
FTI Consulting edged down 0.84 to 29.10 on more than twice its 50-day average volume.
The financial and litigation consultant climbed in seven of the previous eight sessions before taking a break Friday.
