Equity: A couple of lawmakers made quite a media splash last month with a glass ceiling report. But their claims don't hold up.
Women still lag behind men when it comes to pay, say Reps. John Dingell, D-Mich., and Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., who released the study prepared by the General Accounting Office. Dingell said the report "suggests that things are getting worse, not better."
Some of the data that were supposed to shock the public include:
There is still a pay gap between full-time male and female managers in the 10 industries studied.
The pay gap between male and female managers spread between 1995 and 2000 in seven of those industries.
Female managers in the communications industry in 1995 earned 86 cents for every $1 that male managers with similar experience made. In 2000, it was 73 cents to each $1.
Don't start a campaign yet. These data aren't the whole story.
