1 Become a strong problem-solver and you've won half the battle in management, according to two alumni of the world-renowned management/coaching firm McKinsey & Co., headquartered in New York City.
Two keys to problem-solving are structure and discipline, Ethan Rasiel and Paul Friga write in "The McKinsey Mind" (McGraw-Hill, 2002).
The authors are former management coaches at McKinsey, whose other alumni include IBM Chief Executive Lou Gerstner and business guru Tom Peters.
Below are a few problem-solving tips from the authors, based on McKinsey guidelines.
Don't boil the ocean. "Work smarter, not harder. In today's data-saturated world, it's easy to analyze every aspect of a problem six ways to Sunday.
But it's a waste of time unless the analyses you're doing add significant value" to solving the problem, they said.
