UAL loss mushrooms, tops views
The No. 2 U.S. carrier lost $11.47 a share vs. a $2.41 loss a year ago. Analysts expected a loss of $14.96. Revenue slid 40% to $2.9 bil. It sees another "significant loss" in Q1. Feb.'s booked load factor is ahead of '01, but March is flat. United Airlines is working to cut labor costs, seen as crucial to stop massive losses. But analysts remain concerned.
The top eight U.S. airlines lost a combined Q4 loss of $3.2 bil. Only Southwest made money.
Goodyear replacing 200,000 tires
Goodyear Tire will voluntarily replace tires on 15-passenger vans and ambulances amid concerns of tread separation. Goodyear has been hit with 31 suits over such accidents. The move isn't due to defective tires, it added. Goodyear said tread separation was due to factors such as low tire pressure and improper repair. Firestone and Ford recalled millions of tires in '00 and '01 linked to hundreds of deaths.
